Kardiac Kids win title

The Kardiac Kids became the ninth champion in Erie League history when they defeated Captain Tripps last night, 74-55.

The win marks the first championship for four year veteran Jody Barth, who now sports an overall mark of 37-21. Barth becomes just the second owner to win the league title and the regular season scoring title in the same season. The Kids captured that first title four weeks ago when they closed the regular season with 973 points scored.

Mike Bell's Assassins, league champions in 1992, were also the regular season points leader that year.

As Erie League champion, Barth will cash in on $441.38. Captain Tripps owner Matt Rzyczycki, who closes out a fine season at 10-5, collects $255.19 as runner-up and division champion.

The Kids won the contest despite playing without a quarterback. Barth was forced to start benched QB Gus Frerotte when it was learned late last week that Drew Bledsoe would be forced out of action due to his broken thumb. Players who had key roles throughout the season stepped up for Barth, as receivers Randy Moss, James Jett, and Terance Mathis combined for 39 points. Jett was named the game's most valuable player for scoring a team high 16 points.

Rzyczycki's squad had a shot coming into the Monday night game if Terrell Davis could equal his 23 point regular season scoring average. Instead, Miami's defense held Davis to two points, his lowest point total of the season.

In the battle for third place, Sam Profio's Donikers-DTL earned the distinction by holding off Brad Rzyczycki's Cosmic Monsters (9-6) 83-74. Darnay Scott led the way for the Donikers with 21 points, enabling Profio to close out the year with an 11-4 mark. Rzyczycki ends the season on a disappointing note, losing his last two games after setting a playoff scoring record in the first round.

For winning the third place game and a division crown earlier this month, Profio will earn $157.71. Rzyczycki, the champion in the Diamond Division, takes home $125.47 for the campaign.

"Thanks to all of you for another great season of fantasy football," said Erie League commissioner Kirk Pavelich. "I look forward to seeing all of you on Saturday January 9th at the rules and awards banquet. Jody - you know the tradition. You owe us a round."
